With Max Verstappen on pole and Sergio Perez lining up fourth for Saturday’s F1 Sprint in Austria, Helmut Marko has issued clear instructions for the two Red Bull drivers at their team’s home circuit.
Red Bull special advisor Helmut Marko has issued a simple instruction for drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez ahead of Saturday’s F1 Sprint race at Austria’s Red Bull Ring.
“It will be very, very exciting on Saturday,” Marko told Sky Germany.
“Drive without mistakes and keep the tyres alive,” came the Austrian’s orders to Verstappen and Perez.
Verstappen snatched pole position on his final run by less than 0.1 seconds from the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, with Perez lining up behind them in fourth.
Marko noted that Verstappen’s pole-winning run was thanks in part to some minor adjustments by the Red Bull mechanics, after previous runs had seen the RB18 use up too much of its tyres.
“In the previous runs we had hardly any grip left from the tyres in the last sector. We used them too much and then adjusted [that],” said Marko.
The top eight finishers in the Sprint race will each earn Championship points, and the finishing order of the Saturday event will determine the starting grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
2022’s only previous Sprint event, at Imola, saw a clean sweep for Verstappen, who won both Sprint and Grand Prix from pole position.
