World No. 6 Carlos Alcaraz says he doesn’t consider himself as the best player in the world as he has given that nod to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz has had an outstanding 2022 season as he has won two Masters titles and he is on the verge of breaking into the top-5 even though he has just turned 19.
En route to winning the Madrid Masters, Alcaraz defeated Nadal and Djokovic in back-to-back matches. Alcaraz has achieved some pretty impressive things this year but he is remaining humble and refusing to call himself the best.
“I don’t think I am the best player right now, I mean, Novak [Djokovic] won Wimbledon, Rafa [Nadal] Roland Garros and Australia, so there are a lot of great players ahead of me right now,” Alcaraz said, per Sportskeeda.
“I didn’t take it as a pressure. It is just motivation for me, but I don’t think I am the best player right now”.
Alcaraz returns to clay
After Wimbledon, Alcaraz decided to return to clay. On Tuesday, Alcaraz kicked off his campaign in Hamburg.
Alcaraz is the top seed in Hamburg and he is determined to have a memorable debut at the German clay event. Alcaraz didn’t make a convincing start to his Hamburg but he was able to beat Nicola Kuhn 3-6 6-1 7-6 (3). “The French Open was unbelievable for me, reaching the quarter-finals, playing a good match against Zverev,” Alcaraz reflected.
“I’m excited to come back to play on clay, doing my best. Of course I have the level and confidence to win the tournament. I am very excited to play here for my first time [it’s a big tournament]. I talked with [My coach] Juan Carlos [Ferrero] and he played here a long time ago and he said it is a beautiful tournament. I’m really excited to play here. I am comfortable being the top seed, I am motivated by it”.
