Iga Swiatek was one of the undisputed protagonists of the WTA Tour in this 2022. The young and talented athlete won the title of number one by taking advantage of the retirement of the then number 1 Ashleigh Barty and giving almost nothing to that moment.
Iga has achieved an incredible streak of 37 consecutive victories, conquering the Roland Garros and several other titles. Swiatek’s record stopped at Wimbledon where the athlete, a great favorite of the tournament, was sensationally eliminated.
Swiatek on the eve of the WTA 1000 in Toronto, a tournament where she starts as a favorite and where she returns after several years talked about what she wants from this event. The women number explained in the press conference: “I came here last in 2019 and I played two great matches against Caroline Wozniacki and Naomi Osaka.
When I arrived I was very different from now, in every training I studied and reviewed all my movements and my opponent’s, I saw the challenges of those who at that moment considered to be too strong for me.”
Iga Swiatek in Toronto: “I don’t just want to win”
The tennis player talked about the record of successes that she caused so much discussion within the Tour: “I am aware that there are players who have done better, but I am proud of what I did in my first part of the season.
Now I hope I can feel freer when I play because I really don’t have anything to prove by now. On the other hand, maybe the record can put some kind of pressure on me and so I try not to think about the past but only about what is to come.
So many young people? I think we players will find ourselves playing against each other for the rest of our career. It’s great to have both more experienced players and younger athletes on the Tour. The goal is not just to win, I also want to improve some of the things in my game. We had time to train after Roland Garros and Wimbledon, so I hope he managed to implement my game.”
